Against the ice is a film directed by Peter Flint featuring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones). It is based on a novel written by Ejnar Mikkelsen.
Parcel
In 1909, the Danish expedition to Alabama led by Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen (Coster-Waldau) attempted to refute the United States’ claim to northeast Greenland, a claim that was rooted in the idea that Greenland was divided into two different lands. Leaving their crew with the ship, Mikkelsen hangs out on the ice with his inexperienced crew member, Iver Iversen (Joe Cole). The two men manage to find proof that Greenland is one island, but the return to the ship takes longer and is much more difficult than expected. Battling extreme hunger, fatigue, and a polar bear attack, they finally arrive to find their ship crushed in the ice and the camp abandoned. (Filmaffinity)
movie reviews
“The characters are so finely drawn, and the expected dynamic between idealistic rookie and grizzled veteran is so weak that we are never moved by their fate” Jessica Kiang: Variety
“It’s a passion project pushed by Coster-Waldau (…) His audience, however, still stays out there in streamer country, and they’ll be the ones looking for that, if not quite crossing the ice to get to this.” Fionnuala Halligan: Screendaily
“It’s less the unconvincing dialogue that sinks ‘Against the Ice’ and more the fact that it reliably renders life or death situations hairy, well, boring” David Rooney: the Hollywood journalist
