The official trailer for Persuasion shows that this is going to be an adaptation of Austen like you’ve never seen her before, especially in terms of storytelling style. It’s fun, light and quite vibrant, unlike most adaptations of classic novels that we are used to seeing. Sure, there’s plenty of romance, drama, and complex family dynamics, with a little more emphasis on humor.

The highlight of the trailer, however, isn’t the brilliant costumes or the characters, but the narrative. At various points, we see Johnson’s Anne breaking the fourth wall and addressing the audience directly. This will give you plenty of Fleabag vibes, except our heroine is from the Victorian era. It feels quite unique for these period films, and it adds to the appeal of the story and its characters.

The clip also shows glimpses of the other main characters played by the actors. Richard E. Grant’s flamboyant Sir Walter Elliot, Cosmo Jarvis’ Captain Wentworth, and Henry Golding’s Mr. Elliot are the three main male characters and are definitely worth the wait.

The female characters, on the other hand, also seem quite interesting and very different from Austen’s women. Although Johnson’s Anne Elliot resembles Austen’s classic heroine in many ways, she seems more modern and unconventional. The contemporaneity of the storytelling is evident in the costumes worn by the characters, which are essentially a slightly modern adaptation of traditional Victorian fashion.

What is persuasion?

Persuasion is the last novel Jane Austen wrote before her death in 1817. The original story, which inspired the 2022 Netflix film, is a tale of lost and found love, heartbreak and separation. The story is told from Anne’s point of view. Once wealthy, the Elliots are no longer in dire straits, as the trailer shows. Anne recounts her family, the false pride her father still harbors, the man she once loved and lost, and how the opinions of others have always influenced her decisions. And yet, she wants to keep her individuality. Anne has regrets and that’s why when life gives her another chance to reconnect with Captain Wentworth, she feels the pain again.

Surrounded by her legitimate and involved parents, she is once again alone with the return of the dashing and self-taught Captain Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), with whom she broke off her engagement nearly a decade ago at the request of those who surrounded, considering it a degrading match. In a sense, Persuasion is also an exploration of the lives of once wealthy but still entitled people in Regency times. On the other side of things, the story also explores the societal expectations placed on women and the limits placed on their wants and desires. The new adaptation seeks to tell the same story, but with a unique narrative style which adds an almost modern flavor to the plot.
