The biopic of “Queen of Soul” by Aretha Franklin, The respect, will be released on August 13 (Friday). The singer-songwriter would be performed by Dream girls (2006) star Jennifer Hudson. The film is said to have been in development for almost 15 years.
Aretha chose Hudson to portray her in the film, and the latter said CNN:
“I think she saw something in me. I couldn’t have gone as far as I did to tell the story honestly without my own life experiences. So I think she saw that in me, as well as everything else this far as an actress and a singer. “
Respect is named after Aretha Franklin’s song of the same name, which won a Grammy in 1967. Otis Redding originally performed the song in 1965.

The film will explore Aretha Franklin’s journey to global fame and glory, from her humble beginnings singing for her father’s church choir. Respect will also feature Aretha’s struggles against racism and misogyny.
Aretha Franklin’s biopic to be released to the world August 13. Most of the countries where COVID restrictions on theater screenings are lifted will see the film released on Friday, while Portugal, Hungary and Slovakia will be able to watch Respect for. 12 august.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, New Zealand and Saudi Arabia will be waiting until August 19. UK and Ireland to release film September 9.
No streaming date or window has been released yet. The film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and distributed internationally by Universal (Sony) could hint at an Amazon Prime release for streaming. Amazon acquired MGM in May, which could give the streaming service the first access to ownership.
However, the exact date of the streaming release of Aretha Franklin’s Respect biopic cannot be predicted.
The main cast
Respect will feature Oscar-winning singer and actress Jennifer Hudson (from Smash Fame). Meanwhile, Oscar winner Forest Whitaker (of 2018 Black Panther glory) plays Aretha’s father, CL Franklin.
Additional cast includes Audra McDonald as Aretha’s mother, Barbara, Saycon Sengbloh as Erma (Aretha’s older sister), Hailey Kilgore as Carolyn (Aretha’s younger sister) and Marlon Wayans as as Aretha’s ex-husband, Ted White.
The film is directed by Liesl Tommy, known for directing an episode of the Marvel / Netflix series Jessica jones. Respect is written by Callie Khouri and Tracey Scott Wilson.
